History of Most Music

Josh Dunn started his first DJ Service around 1990.  His first DJ Service was called "The Wild Thang".  During this time in Josh's DJ career he had to beg for dances to play and often times ended up playing those dances for free.  In 1990 Josh's DJ equipment consisted of a house amplifier, tape deck and CD player.  He gradually upgraded his equipment adding a stereo mixer and microphone.  Eventually word got around and started to get calls from local groups who offered to let him play music for them (for free of course)! In 1992 Josh took an entrepreneur class in high school.  In this class, Josh was given the task of coming up with a business and creating a plan to get that business up and running.  Since Josh was an aspiring DJ, he chose his DJ business as his project.  He felt that he should start fresh with a new name that was a bit more universal so that people would have the right image in their mind when they thought of his DJ service, thus the creation of “Most Music”.  Every since that time Josh has strived to live up to the name he chose and have a very extensive music collection so he would have a little something for everyone.  Later that year, Josh got his first paying gig playing a fundraiser dance for the local FFA chapter.  For his first paid, four hour dance Josh received a total of $40.

Back in the early 1990’s CDs were not all that prevalent.  Most DJ services at that time were using records or tapes to play dances.  Josh could see that CDs where the future for his DJ service because they would allow him to take requests and play them immediately.  He began collecting CD’s (with a little help from his sister’s music collection) and started pushing this idea.

As time went on Josh started picking up on the finer aspects of his craft and stared to get bookings on a monthly basis.  By the time high school graduation came in 1993 he was playing dances for $150 per night. During that same time Josh developed a DJ stand that would set the appearance of his DJ service apart from other DJs and help his overall presentation by providing consistency to his lightshow.  His father helped him build the DJ stand after school in the high school shop.  At the time, this was another thing that made Most Music unique.  Most DJs at the time used a table to put their components on and placed lights wherever they could fit them.  Josh noticed that this made each show very different depending on the room.  Josh wanted to make sure that Most Music’s setup provided consistency that the other DJ’s did not have.  (Check out our stand/booth in the photo gallery to see our unique setup that helps our lights work the way they should and gives us a unique presence in the room.  You will know us when you see us!)
In the fall of 1993 Josh started college at Chadron State College and that first semester he met his future wife and business partner Tara.  That same semester Josh played a couple of homecoming dances and wedding dances and Tara got a chance to see him in action and thought that he had just as much to offer as the large franchised DJ services.  Tara noticed that the College activity director was advertising for a DJ to play almost weekly dances and was offering a 15 dance semester contract.  Tara convinced Josh to apply and see what would happen.  As luck would have it, the contract was awarded to Most Music for the fall semester of 1994.  Josh realized that he needed to upgrade his equipment for such a contract and used his credit cards to purchase all professional equipment.  He also realized that he would need a pickup to haul his equipment because he would not be able to use his parents’ vehicles that often.  At that point Josh took out his first loan and purchased a 1984 Ford for $2,500.  Josh knew he would need help so he hired his girlfriend, Tara, to help him out that semester.  He rented a storage unit in Chadron to store his equipment and before every dance Josh and Tara would drive to the storage unit load the equipment, drive to the dance and unload the equipment and set up, play the dance, load the equipment back in the pickup, drive back to the storage unit, unload the equipment into the unit and then drive home.  After a semester of hearing Tara complain about this, Josh decided he needed a trailer to store his equipment in to save some time and labor.  A second loan was taken out to buy an enclosed cargo trailer and was approved based on his contract for the following semester.

Once Josh and Tara stared to play college dances they received instant credibility and they stared to get calls for all kinds of weddings, homecomings, Christmas parties, winter royalty dances and other special events.  The busiest year for Most Music was during Josh and Tara’s college years and during that particular year they played 48 dances.  Now, with two full time careers Josh and Tara have slowed down a little, but they still play around 30 dances per year on average.

Most Music's library is now over 15,000 songs strong.  Most Music now uses a computer to search for song requests and play the music.  They can tell you if they have your request in a matter of moments and play your request the very next song.  To keep from sacrificing sound quality Most Music ripped their entire library in the Apple Lossless format so that the music played off the computer is in full CD quality.  Most computer based DJ's today use a compressed format to play their music, like the format used on an Ipod.  This is fine for the little earbuds you use on an Ipod but when you put that format through high quality speakers at 3,400 watts of power you can tell something is missing.  Most Music offers all the advantages of a computer DJ without sacrificing sound quality.   The rest, as they say, is history. Josh and Tara now live in Harrison NE and have two boys, Jesse and Seth (the future of Most Music).
